FAQs about DogWatch of Topeka

How does the hidden fence system work?
A wire is buried underground to define the areas where your pet can roam. A lightweight, waterproof receiver is worn by your pet. The receiver will emit a warning notice to the dog when it approaches the hidden fence. If the dog tires to cross the fence, the dog will experience a mild shock that feels similar to a static electricity shock.

Will the shock hurt my dog?
No. The shock received is mild and will not hurt your pet. This type of dog training has been used for more than 40 years. The amount of corrective shock can be adjusted by the customer to accommodate the size and temperament of your pet. DogWatch products are safety tested and veterinarian recommended.

How will my dog be trained to use the system?
Dog training is essential for effective use of the system.

DogWatch of Topeka Pet Containment Systems
“DogWatch of Topeka did a fabulous job setting up our hidden fence. It’s easy to use and our dog really enjoys having the run of the backyard.” ---Janet, Topeka

After the fence is professionally installed, we will set up a training session to introduce the system to your dog. Your dog will learn the boundaries through verbal commands and flags. You will receive instruction on how to train your dog to use the system twice a day for 7-10 days. Flags will gradually be removed as your pet learns. If your pet gets too close to the barrier, they will hear an audible command warning them to not cross the boundary. If your pet persists, they will receive a mild shock stimulation. After the training period, your pet should be able to use the system with ease.

Will the fence contain multiple pets?
Yes. Additional collars can be purchased for multiple pets.

Is DogWatch only for dogs?
No. DogWatch can be used with cats and even pot belly pigs!

How is the system installed?
A wire is buried underground to define the containment area. We use a machine that makes a thin slit in the ground to bury the wire---hardly disturbing the yard at all! The wire can be place on the bare ground in the winter if the ground is frozen and then buried in the spring.. It can also be hidden under rocks and bushes. The wire will not disturb landscaping.

How much area can be contained?
Whether you need to contain a small backyard or several farm acres, we can create a system to meet your specific needs. Systems can be created to contain up to 200 acres.

How do I maintain the system?
Each DogWatch receiver has a two-year battery life---the longest in the industry. The system requires very little maintenance.

What happens if I move?
Simply take the receiver (collar) and transmitter with you and call us to install new wiring at your new home.

What happens if there is a lightening strike or a power outage?
The system contains a surge protector in case lightening strikes. It is the same type of surge protection that is common in the telecommunications industry. There is also an 8-hour battery back-up on the system in case of a power outage.

Is my dog too old / too young to be trained to use the system?
Because puppies have short attention spans, it is best to wait until they are 6 months old. Older dogs can still “learn new tricks” and can be trained to use the system.

Why is DogWatch better than other systems?
It is safety tested and veterinarian approved. It is a top-quality product that is made in the U.S.A. It is the only hidden fence system that operates on an FM frequency, which sends a more reliable and consistent signal to your pet. The customer can make system adjustments without a house call from a technician. DogWatch products have surge protection to protect against lightening strikes as well as battery back-up for power outages. It is reliable and easy to use!

How much does it cost?
To have the system set up for one dog, the cost is approximately $600. Additional collars cost $250 each. Wire installation costs about 60 cents a foot, depending on terrain.
